Therapy Services

I am Joanna Burga, LCSW (CA License #87916), a therapist who offers teletherapy to individuals who are motivated to engage in their healing journey and grow into more insightful, expanded, and grounded versions of themselves.

My specialties include working with adults who are high achievers struggling with anxiety, individuals who have experienced adverse experiences including trauma, first- and second-generation Americans, and those experiencing grief and loss (i.e., life transitions and various types of loss).

I bring a warm, empathetic, and nonjudgmental style to my work while also collaborating with you to set realistic goals that support meaningful progress and improved well-being. I am skilled at helping clients recognize the parts of their lives that may be outside their awareness, bringing insight to subconscious beliefs, feelings, and behavioral patterns in order to support true and lasting positive change.

I believe that collaboration with other healthcare providers—such as psychiatrists and medical specialists—can lead to improved outcomes. With your consent, I work closely with your providers to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach to care. By taking a team-based approach, I support individuals in addressing the root causes of their challenges and work toward enhancing overall functioning and well-being.

Modalities:

Motivational Interviewing:

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, goal-oriented approach that helps clients explore and resolve ambivalence about change. Rather than telling you what to do, this method meets you where you are—honoring your autonomy and inner wisdom. It’s particularly effective for those navigating transitions, building healthier habits, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Through open-ended questions, active listening, and empathetic dialogue, MI helps strengthen your motivation and confidence to make meaningful, lasting changes.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

CBT is a structured, evidence-based approach focused on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This modality helps identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that may contribute to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and other concerns. Together, we work to develop practical coping strategies and healthier ways of thinking that support emotional resilience and well-being. CBT empowers you with tools to better understand your inner world and create shifts that align with your goals and values.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a powerful, trauma-informed therapy designed to help the brain process and heal from distressing memories and experiences. Often used to treat PTSD, anxiety, and unresolved trauma, EMDR works by activating the brain’s natural healing processes through guided eye movements or bilateral stimulation. This approach allows you to reprocess painful memories in a supportive and controlled environment, reducing their emotional charge and transforming how they are stored in the brain. EMDR can help you feel less triggered, more grounded, and more at peace with your past.

I strive to create a non-judgemental, compassionate and welcoming space to support you in your therapeutic goals.
