About Us

Joanna

Joanna Burga is the founder of Wave of Consciousness LLC, an organization dedicated to guiding individuals toward living as their most authentic, abundant, and peaceful selves. Through individual virtual therapy, immersive retreats, and transformative workshops, she helps individuals break free from limiting beliefs and create lives that are aligned and fulfilling.

Her approach integrates holistic healing and deep inner work with the transformative power of meaningful connection—whether with others, nature, or a supportive community. Joanna provides individual virtual therapy for people based in California and facilitates global retreats designed for those seeking deeper healing, growth, and transformation. She is especially passionate about fostering community and creating spaces where individuals feel empowered, connected, and supported.

With over a decade of experience in the mental health field, Joanna brings warmth, empathy, and a deep commitment to ensuring others feel seen and valued. Whether through one-on-one therapy, retreat experiences, or dynamic workshops, her mission is to help individuals cultivate lives that feel expansive, peaceful, and truly their own.

Personal Background

Joanna is a California native who grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles and now calls San Diego County home. Outside of her work as a therapist, she enjoys staying active—whether it's going to the gym, surfing, or swimming in the ocean. She also cherishes quieter moments, often spent reading a good book either at home or by the beach.

Having lived in California, Wales, and Australia, Joanna has a deep appreciation for the richness of different cultures and ways of life. Her passion for understanding diverse perspectives continues to shape both her personal journey and her therapeutic approach. She values meaningful connection and draws inspiration from the stories, resilience, and backgrounds of the individuals she works with.

Before transitioning into full-time private practice, Joanna gained experience in hospitals and outpatient programs across Southern California, including UCLA Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and Venice Family Clinic through UCLA Health. She also had the opportunity to work internationally at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, Australia—an experience that further broadened her clinical and cultural perspective.

Educational Background

Joanna holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California (USC), where she specialized in Children and Families and earned her Pupil Personnel Services Credential. She graduated in 2015.

She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with honors from California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) in 2013. During her final year, she studied abroad at Swansea University in Wales, where she embraced the local culture and became an active member of both the dance society and surf club. She fondly recalls her time abroad as a formative and once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In October 2022, Joanna completed her training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy through EMDR Consulting. She is grateful to have this powerful modality in her therapeutic toolkit, allowing her to support individuals in accessing the subconscious mind and body to address issues at the root level.

What Participants & Collaborators Say About Us

“Being on this retreat was a breath of fresh air. It’s amazing when you find yourself in spaces of authenticity where you can feel safe and be yourself. Not only did I get to connect to my body and emotions through body work practices like breathwork and yoga, the team leaders curated such a wonderful space for deeper connection to self and others!”
